Lessons learnt from actively balancing two units magnetically with rotor segmentation and dedicated power supplies which results in resolving vibration issues

This paper presents results from a method to handle and manipulate unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP) in synchronous machines. We introduce the UMP fundamentally, describe its negative impact on electrical machines and how it is generally managed. The concept of active magnetic balancing (AMB) for salient pole electrically excited machines is introduced and described in detail. It is a new method to manipulate airgap flux density space harmonics. It can be used to remove undesired forces between the rotor and stator and also create desired ones simultaneously. We describe the early development and state of the art.
