Characteristics and Application of Multi-Function Conductors

In Japan, overhead transmission lines are exposed to various natural hazards such as earthquakes, snow, and typhoons, and different countermeasures have been applied. In particular, heavy snow accretion on conductors has caused serious problems, including tower collapse and sleet-jump events. For this reason, snow-resistant rings and counterweights have been installed on conductors where heavy snow accretion is expected. The snow-resistant ring suppresses snow accretion that develops along the lay direction of the conductor, while the counterweight reduces snow accretion by preventing conductor twisting caused by uneven snow loading.
