Development of an IEC 61850-9-2LE-Based Process Bus Demonstration, Testing and Training Environment

The uptake of IEC 61850 process bus by the power industry at large has been limited, however implementation stories such as [1] are slowly starting to feature in the power distribution landscape. It accounts how a power utility has fully committed to a future with digital substations, while citing construction and cost advantages over conventional substations as drivers. Their commitment was organisational, integrating the training of existing operations and maintenance personnel with the introduction of the technology, which ensures the success of the solution moving forward. But those high notes remain anomalous in the hum of the inherently risk-averse world of power utilities. That they are watching with great interest is certain, but still from a relative distance.
