Case of converter control improving on-site harmonics performance

A large-scale operational Inverter Based Renewable (IBR) project measured harmonic performance that exceeds the compliance threshold for the 6th order. Primarily, a control solution is developed and implemented on the Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) converters to reduce the harmonic voltage distortion. On-site investigations were conducted to support the solution development, where measurements from several locations and different operating configurations were reviewed in conjunction with the Wind Farm topology and electrical design. Control strategies that were proposed and tested include feedforward control, changing controller harmonics feedback loop input signals, and active harmonic cancelling approaches.
