Practical comparison of powerline uprating and upgrading results

transmission lines (OHTL) typically yield significantly different increases in transfer capacity, with equally disparate associated costs. Using a recently completed uprating case study as a basis, commentary is given on the relative advantages and disadvantages of different options considered in the study. A number of different High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS*) conductors are evaluated, as well as thermal uprating of existing infrastructure, rebuilding and voltage upgrade options. The relative Total Investment Cost (TIC) versus MVA benefit above the base case of each option is discussed and practical selection methods are given which will result in the most cost efficient strategy for the utility. The work methodology that was used is discussed, including lessons learnt during the study.
