Sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) continues to be indispensable in high-voltage transmission systems due to its superior dielectric and arc-quenching properties. However, its extremely high global warming potential and long atmospheric lifetime necessitate disciplined management to minimise environmental impact across its entire lifecycle. While regulatory frameworks increasingly emphasise SF₆ emission control, effective implementation within large, geographically dispersed transmission utilities remains a practical challenge.
