The Japanese power grid is uniquely divided into two frequency regions:50 Hz in the east and 60 Hz in the west. These regions are linked by frequency converters (FC) with a total capacity of 2100 MW. Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, there has been a critical need to enhance transmission capacity between these regions to enable power exchange during emergencies and, to be utilized in electricity market operations. Higashi-Shimizu FC is undergoing an expansion with the 2 units of Voltage Source Converter (VSC), with a combined capacity of 600 MW, scheduled to start operation in 2028. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the system configuration and design aspects for the Higashi-Shimizu FC.
