Point-on-Wave performance when considering the statistical switching behaviour of the circuit breaker
In general, controlled or Point-on-Wave (PoW) switching is considerably applied in transmission grids to mitigate transients occurring upon switching a component. PoW switching is regularly applied in the High Voltage (HV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV) Dutch transmission grids of TenneT TSO to facilitate the switching of capacitor banks, cable circuits, power transformers, and shunt reactors. For the first three, the PoW switching technique is specified in the Power Quality requirements. This policy is partly based on the system operational data and rules of thumb, which originate from project-specific simulation studies.
