Development of a new lightning location system designed for parameter estimation

Lightning Location Systems (LLSs) are widely used in Japan. Such conventional LLS are insufficient for the suitable maintenance of damage caused by lightning strokes. To solve this problem, a newly designed LLS is under development by our research institute. The system has been mainly developed for the uses of the detection of lightning damaged ground wires of transmission lines. It can detect lightning strokes with large charge amounts (>50 C) and precisely locate strike points within several tens of meters. Thus, the urgency of maintenance for damaged ground wires can be identified using data provided by the newly designed LLS.
