Scaling Innovation to System Impact - How the Kopernikus Flagships Translate Research into Grid-Ready Solutions for 2045 Climate Targets
The German Kopernikus initiative, launched in 2016 as one of the country's largest energy research programs, is now completing its third and final phase. This paper reports results from three complementary flagship projects - ENSURE, P2X, and SynErgie - that collectively address the transformation of electricity networks into active, multi-vector energy backbones capable of meeting Germany's 2045 climate neutrality targets. Building upon fundamental research in Phase 1 and pilot-scale demonstrations in Phase 2, the current phase focuses on large-scale validation and the translation of research outcomes into grid-ready solutions.
