This paper presents some of the issues of connecting a wind power plant (WPP) to a weak AC network and shows through simulation results the difficulties in operating systems with very low short circuit ratios at the point of common coupling. WPP fault ride through performance was evaluated with two different wind generator arrangements: namely the Type III or doubly fed induction generator, and the Type IV or full converter generator. Four mitigation strategies are addressed: synchronous compensation, static compensation, remote voltage measurement with PMUs for PLL synchronization, and a modification of the standard converter controllers.
