Simulation Study on Switching Over-voltages in HVDC Cable Transmission System
The Voltage Source Converter (VSC) High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable transmission is very suitable for many special applications such as island power supply and distributed generation connection. The transient over-voltages due to switching operation, internal faults or lightning strikes have a great impact on the reliability of the VSC-HVDC cable transmission system. In this paper, the transmission and attenuation characteristics of the transient over-voltages in DC cable system under different switching and failure modes were studied. An electromagnetic transient simulating model based on a typical bipolar VSC-HVDC project was established with the transient analysis software of PSCAD/EMTDC.
