Icing on insulators seriously affects the security of power system. The existing anti-icing/de-icing techniques are primarily used on transmission lines. The anti-icing/de-icing techniques specific to insulators are still in its infancy. Combining super-hydrophobicity and electrothermal properties, a hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (OH-PDMS)-modified nano-silica/carbon hybrid coating has been developed to solve the problem of insulator icing. In this paper, the thermal effect of insulators coated with OH-PDMS-modified nano-silica/carbon hybrid coating is studied. Temperature distribution and icing morphology in energized icing period are observed. The thermal field distribution is simulated by finite element method to verify the thermal effect of this new coating. The experimental…
